No matter which class you attend at Petworth Fitness, you’ll often hear us talking about ‘hinge movements’. This might be a deadlift, a kettle bell swing, the start of any Olympic lift, etc. Your hips are a major muscle group that can move a significant amount of load, but it requires stability and strength to be done correctly from a hinge position that protects your spine. We talk about this often at the gym, but it translates equally into everyday life just as well. This article from NPR is a fascinating look at cultural differences in spinal positions and back pain. It’s suggesting that the hinge may be more important than we think. Not just in sport but in everyday life!
